Angel rode along for the next two weeks, always having to stay in the van. Peri refused to take a sheriff any place where his business associates were. The wolf just watched and learned a great deal about a world he knew nothing about.

The kids that sat with him explained that they took the cars to a tagger, a person who bought the vehicles from them. The tagger would have the numbers filed off, then stamp their own numbers back on. They’d launder the documentation, by taking clean paperwork from an identical car in another state. After changing VIN numbers and license plates, they were ready for shipment.

When cleaned up, the cars and trucks were shipped to another state or country and sold to clients waiting for a particular vehicle. That was Peri’s little domain. He was an expert at locating and taking the exact car required for a client and delivering it in pristine condition.

Heaven help anyone, however, who happened to buy one from an unscrupulous car dealer, then move to the state it had originally been stolen in. It had happened, and the results for the last person buying the car weren’t pretty. There were a lot other things, like the fact that Spider was their handler, but Peri told them not to share too much with the sheriff. Angel had had no idea all this went on.

After two weeks of arguing, fighting, and searching, they came up empty. Angel was getting more depressed by the day. He’d lost his girl. He kept himself going by convincing himself he wasn’t going to lose his mate too.

Peri and Angel fought constantly. Then, unable to keep their hands off each other, they’d make love. Of course Peri never called it that. He refused to. It was just fucking to him. One-offs. That’s all it was, even if he did keep coming back for more.

He would never, ever consider breaking down the ten feet thick, wall of ice encasing his heart. Not for a lover. His kids—yes, but no one else.

Angel had tried and tried to get his man to love him back with no success. To take a chance on him. Hell, just open up a little. But nope, wasn’t happening. No matter what he did, what he said, how much he tried, the results were always the same.

When he’d pushed too hard, which was often, Peri would either slam his fist into him or bite him viciously when he least expected it, then disappear. Sometimes for days.

The otter wouldn’t let him stay at his place either. He didn’t trust any adult that much, so they spent their nights in Angel’s room. The enforcer was confused. He couldn’t figure out why Peri kept coming back if he didn’t want to be mates. It had to be the mate pull, which grew stronger as time went on, driving them both insane.

After another month, they’d actually been making progress, and Angel began to feel hope between him and his hardheaded, stubborn, feisty mate.
